Wisdom teeth, often known as third molars, are the teeth that are the last ones to erupt in the oral cavity. They usually erupt in the late teens or early twenties. There are instances where they erupt in late adulthood even. If the eruption is mal aligned / irregular, or beneath the adjacent tooth, or the eruption is incomplete, they are termed as impacted wisdom teeth. These require extraction to avoid damage to adjacent tooth, smooth functioning of oral cavity and to mitigate pain.
